Inspired by this post by @thanergetic-hyperlinks, I present to you
Tessellations of the Nine Houses
(Or "I can't really draw figurative art so my Locked Tomb fanarts are geometrical vector drawings")
"A tessellation or tiling is the covering of a surface, often a plane, using one or more geometric shapes, called tiles, with no overlaps and no gaps." — Wikipedia.
Making tilings themed after each necromantic House seems obvious: for each House you pick a tile with the same number of sides as the number of the House; but this does present some challenges for some of the Houses.
note 1: this might give the impression that I first decided on the symbols and then found patterns to match them in a very organized and motivated manner; in practice it was much more chaotic and multidirectional, the patterns informing the symbols as much as the symbols informed the patterns; this is fine since symbolism is entirely associative and arbitrary anyway
note 2: I added alt-texts for all the images, but I have no idea of how to properly describe abstract geometric art; if you feel you can do a better job than I did, feel free to put your fingers where your mouth is--wait, hang on-- I mean feel free to provide better descriptions if you can
note 3: looking forward to the geometry nerds explaining to me how I got basic geometric details wrong, friggin nerds
The First House
The First House seems obvious, as a shape with one side is an ellipse (of which the circle is a special case). There's just one problem: ellipses do not tile the plane. No matter how much you stretch them and deform them, the very nature of ellipses means you'll always have gaps or overlaps.
So we cheat and we work with overlaps: turns out there is a history of tilings that use circles as a construction pattern, then turn the overlapping sections into the actual tiles. Such patterns have been used extensively in European and Middle Eastern art, and have also been associated with the New Age movement, so it fits Jod's style perfectly. And so we get this:
Tumblr media
The different cells correspond to different House colors, with the resulting gothic stained-glass appearance quite in line with the Roman Catholic Empire vibe Jod is going for. The overlapping circles convey the intricacy of the relation between the First House and the eight other, both autonomous from it yet intrinsically part of it.
The Second House
There's a variety of geometrical shapes that have two sides, but most of them don't tile the plane, altho there is one that does — if we take a crescent shape and slightly thicken it so that the inner and outer curves are identical, we can do this:
Tumblr media
The waving pattern is of course evocative of the flag of conquest which the Cohorts of the Second House have planted on many worlds.
The Third House
With the Third House things get a lot easier, because equilateral triangles are one of the three regular polygons (where all sides are the same length and all angles are identical) that tile the plane all by themselves without needing any other shape! Which however doesn't mean we have to be boring; we can have a little bit of fun:
Tumblr media
Flowers for the beauty and ionizing radiation warning signs for the rancid vibes.
The Fourth House
Squares are the second regular polygons that tile the plane by themselves, so again our job is easy here, altho we still want to not go for the easiest option in order to be able to work in some symbolism:
Tumblr media
The four big navy squares with a small white square at the center of course evoke the number five and the shadow of the Fifth House's regency over the Fourth.
The Fifth House
Regular pentagons do not tile the plane, so we have to use a more unusual shape — there are many options, but obviously we want to again pick one that offers some interesting numerical symbolism:
Tumblr media
The cross-like patterns of course bring up the number four and the hold of the Fifth House over the Fourth. As for the crosses themselves and the fact that they appear to be made of wooden stakes, well uh… Abigail Pent, Vampire Hunter??? She does have Van Helsing vibes.
The Sixth House
Hexagons are the third and last regular polygons that tile the plane on their own. But this is the Sixth House we're talking about, things need to look orderly but in a convoluted way. So how about multiple levels of recursion:
Tumblr media
The apparent complexity of the pattern is created by different orientations of a small number of elements, either 3 irregular hexagons, or 1 patterned regular hexagonal tile, depending on how you look at it, in line with the kind of hermetic scientism one imagines the Sixth House indulges in. The result is those apparent three-dimensional elements and emerging higher-order patterns, including that of ꙮ, the Multiocular O found in exactly one word of one 15th century Old Church Slavonic translation of the Book of Psalms ("серафими многоꙮчитїй" many-eyed seraphim).
The Seventh House
Regular heptagons do not tile the plane, but they don't need much tweaking to work, which is fine since for the Seventh House we want something deceptive yet simple (deceptively simple? deceptive in its simplicity?):
Tumblr media
Hearts for the beauty, snake scales for the poison [the Seventh House is on Venus, the planet named after the Roman Goddess of love, but etymologically "Venus" is actually the same root as "venom", and of course "Septimus" resembles "septic" — tho in that case there's no etymological connection, it's just a happy coincidence].
The Eighth House
Octagons do not tile the plane, but they come pretty close, so we can give the Eighth House a simple, stern, but slightly threatening pattern:
Tumblr media
Boring sterile bleached temple mosaic, with just a little bit of passive-agression, a perfect fit for Evangelical Christians Tumblr puritans the Eighth House.
The Ninth House
And so we reach the Ninth House. Now the thing about the Ninth House is that, even by imperial standards, they're huge freaks, like they're completely unhinged heretical weirdoes. So, when it comes to their tiling, we need to get weird, like, a lot weirder than we've been so far, and this will require some context, so get ready because now we're officially going on a wild tangent.
So far all the tilings we've seen were periodic. That is, they were drawing a pattern that repeats itself indefinitely in all directions.
But starting in the 1960s, mathematicians began to study aperiodic tilings, tilings that don't repeat; you can keep expanding them forever and never exactly find back the original pattern you started with. The first mathematical proof of such a pattern was made in 1964 and theoretically required 20,426 distinct tile prototypes… This was soon refined to just 104 tile prototypes, then a mere 40. By 1971, it was mathematically demonstrated that you could make such a pattern with just 6 tile prototypes.
Except that was a lie.
Note that I said mathematically demonstrated. As it turns out there was an aperiodic pattern with just 5 tile prototypes, known as Girih, that had been used in Islamic art… since at least the 13th century — but it had historically been treated merely as an element of architectural design, and its mathematical properties weren't studied until 2007.
Then in 1973 this guy Penrose came along and demonstrated you could make an aperiodic tiling with just 2 tile prototypes. So now the goal was to find the ultimate aperiodic tiling, the one that would use only one tile prototype. Given how fast the field had progressed so far, it seemed that this discovery was imminent.
It took 50 years.
Not only that, but it was the work of amateur mathematician David Smith who accidentally discovered a 13-sided polygon that could make an aperiodic tiling all by itself (he then had his discovery checked by and co-authored a paper with a number of professional mathematicians).
EXCEPT THAT WAS A LIE AGAIN.
In turns out an aperiodic tiling using only one tile prototype had already been found… in 1936. But since the study of aperiodic tilings only started in the 60s, its significance in that domain wasn't understood at the time. It was seen as significant, but for an entirely unrelated reason: it was the first demonstration of a polygonal shape that needed only two copies of itself to completely enclose the original one — many mathematicians before that point thought the minimum possible was 3 (think of the Triforce from Zelda, with one equilateral triangle completely enclosed between three other identical triangles).
And coincidently, that shape happens to be a highly-irregular nonagon [yes "enneagon" is """technically""" more correct but "nonagon" has been used since the 17th century and is more common and it has Nona in it and Nona loves you]. So here it is, the Voderberg tiling, the freakish freakish tessellation of the Ninth House:
Tumblr media
Like you see this and you're like "what is this, what is that thing, that's not a tiling, what the fuck is that" — but it is, it is a tiling, you can keep adding the freaky polygon and it keeps expanding outward forever, with no gap, no overlap, and with an ever-changing pattern. A double-spiral radiating outward, for Anastasia and Samael, Anastasia and Alecto, Alecto and Harrowhark, Harrowhark and Gideon.
And if you were thinking that this last one must have been significantly harder to draw than the other ones, you would be correct.

The Moment It All Began
Tumblr media
au masterlist all other works
pairing: umich luke hughes x plus size oc
summary: the first meeting and everything after...let's just say, feelings are hard huh?
warnings: mild language, internalised fat-phobia, body image/insecurity, self-isolation, angst, self-esteem issues, unresolved tension that is eventually resolved, mutual pining, vulnerable moments, emotional vulnerability, body image issues, panic response
word count: 4,690
It started, like most disasters, with a favour.
“He’s not dumb,” Emily had insisted, propping her chin on her palm as they studied in the common area. “Just… distracted. And you’re the only one I know who can explain physics without making someone cry.”
Phoebe snorted. “So naturally you thought of me?”
“Come on. You’re good at this. You make that professor sound like a guy who actually knows what he’s talking about.” She nudged her. “It’s just one session. Two, tops.”
“Fine,” she sighed, like it wasn’t already a yes. “But he better not be an asshole.”
Emily grinned. “It’s Luke Hughes. He’s literally a golden retriever in human form.”
That should’ve been the first red flag.
———
He was ten minutes late. She was packing up her notes, already annoyed, when he stumbled into the library lounge with a lopsided smile and wind-tousled hair.
“Sorry—practice ran late.” He dropped his bag like it had personally offended him. “You’re Phoebe, right? Emily’s friend?”
“That’s me,” she said, folding her arms, trying to ignore the way he smelled like cold air and something expensive. “You’re lucky I’m patient.”
Luke grinned, sheepish. “I’ll owe you big. Physics is kicking my ass.”
She raised an eyebrow. “Let me guess—you missed the lecture on Newton’s Third Law because you were doing, like, a triple axel on ice or something?”
He blinked, then laughed, a full-body kind of laugh that startled her with how genuine it sounded.
“Not exactly, but close.”
It was just tutoring. A few sessions here and there. Explaining concepts like vectors and momentum and resistance, drawing diagrams in her notebook because he said it helped him to see it. He was a little scattered, sure, but not in the way she’d expected—he listened. Took notes. Asked questions. And he was funny, in a boyish, easy way. Always a little bit of a mess but never mean about it.
Which made it so much worse when she caught herself watching his hands one afternoon, pencil tapping thoughtfully against his bottom lip, and thought: God, his mouth is pretty.
The thought hit like a freight train. She blinked down at her notes, horrified.
No. Absolutely not.
She shoved the thought down hard and buried it under the safe, familiar weight of physics.
———
The sessions continued. Luke got better. She got worse.
Not at physics—never that. But worse at pretending she didn’t notice the little things.
Like the way he leaned in when he was confused, brow furrowed, lashes dark and long. Or how he laughed with his whole chest, loud and unfiltered. How he always offered to carry her bag, even when she told him not to. How he looked at her—not like she was invisible, or just another tutor-for-hire, but like he actually saw her.
And that terrified her.
Because somewhere along the line, she’d started looking forward to him. To the texts that said “u around? i have no clue what a free-body diagram is”, to the quiet walks back across campus after late-night study sessions, to the smell of cologne and coffee and cold air that followed him everywhere.
And once she’d noticed that? Everything started to unravel.
———
The breaking point was stupid.
A Thursday afternoon. Mid-March. The sky was heavy with the threat of snow, and the library was almost empty. They were hunched over her laptop, going over sample problems, when he stretched his arms above his head and said, “You know, you’re really good at this.”
She shrugged. “I like it. Explaining things helps me learn too.”
“No, I mean…” He sat back, tilting his head. “You’re smart. And you’re nice about it. Most people make me feel like an idiot.”
“You’re not an idiot,” she said, too quickly.
He smiled at her then—soft, grateful. That smile that cracked something open inside her every time.
“I like hanging out with you.”
It was such a simple sentence. But it hit her like a punch to the chest.
She looked away. “Luke—”
“What?”
She didn’t finish the sentence. Just stood up too fast, heart hammering, stuffing her notebook into her backpack like it had personally betrayed her.
“Sorry,” she muttered. “I forgot I—I have a thing. I have to go.”
“Phoebe?” His voice was puzzled, concerned. “Did I say something wrong?”
“No,” she lied, already halfway to the door. “You didn’t.”
———
She didn’t cry until she was halfway home.
And when she did, it wasn’t loud or dramatic. It was the kind of quiet sobbing that felt like shame in motion—tears she didn’t want, for a truth she didn’t want to admit.
She liked him.
God, she liked him.
And how pathetic was that?
Luke Hughes: 6’2”, soft-eyed, NHL-bound, with a smile that could melt glaciers. She could already hear the voice in her head: Delusional much?
Because girls like her—soft and wide and invisible in the way society decided some bodies should be—didn’t end up with boys like that. No matter how sweet he was. No matter how many times he offered to buy her coffee or walked her home or laughed at her dumb jokes. That was just Luke being Luke.
And she—she was ridiculous for thinking it meant something.
She curled up on her bed, stared at the ceiling, and hated herself a little for hoping.
———
She avoided him for four days.
No texts. No library sessions. No walking paths that cut across the hockey facility. When she saw his name light up her phone.
Luke: hey, everything okay?
She didn’t answer.
Because she didn’t know how to explain that she wasn’t mad at him. She was mad at herself. For slipping. For letting him get too close. For thinking—hoping—that maybe she could be the exception to the rule.
By Sunday, Emily cornered her in the hallway outside their dorm.
“You ghosted him.”
She looked away. “I’ve been busy.”
Emily crossed her arms. “He asked if he did something wrong. He looked like a kicked puppy.”
Don’t say that, she wanted to snap. Don’t make him sound sweet when I’m trying to erase him.
Instead, she muttered, “He didn’t. It’s fine.”
“Then tell him that,” Emily said, gentler now. “He’s not a mind reader.”
The thing was—she wanted to. She missed him. Missed his voice, and the way he chewed his lip when he was stuck on a question, and the way his laugh made her stomach flip even when she hated herself for it. But she also knew that if she let him back in, the feelings would follow. And if he didn’t return them—if she caught a flicker of pity in his eyes—it would ruin her.
Hope was a dangerous thing. She’d spent most of her life learning how to live without it.
———
Tuesday night, he caught her.
Literally—rounded the corner outside the library and nearly walked straight into her.
“Oh shit—Phoebe?”
She froze. Too late to run. And honestly, she didn’t have the energy to pretend.
“Hey.”
Luke blinked, then gave her a cautious smile. “You okay?”
“Yeah,” she lied. “Just busy.”
“Right.” He shifted his weight, awkward. “You, uh… weren’t answering my texts.”
Her stomach twisted.
“I know. I’m sorry.”
A pause. She could feel him watching her—really watching, like he was trying to piece together a puzzle with half the pieces missing.
“Did I do something?” he asked finally, voice quiet.
“No,” she said, then forced herself to meet his eyes. “You didn’t do anything wrong.”
He exhaled like he’d been holding his breath. “Okay. Good. I just—I wasn’t sure. You kinda vanished.”
“I know,” she said again. Her fingers curled around the strap of her backpack. “I just needed some space.”
He nodded slowly, and something about the way he stepped back—gave her that space—made her heart ache even more.
“Well,” he said, voice lighter now, “if you ever wanna go over the review packet, I, uh… I still don’t know what the hell potential energy is.”
She almost smiled. Almost.
“I’ll think about it.”
———
She didn’t mean to let him back in. But a few days later, she found herself at their usual table, notes spread out, laptop open, when he dropped into the seat beside her like no time had passed.
No questions. No guilt. Just his usual grin and a half-empty smoothie in hand.
“You’re a lifesaver,” he said, sliding the packet over. “You’re gonna keep me from flunking.”
“God forbid you be academically ineligible,” she teased, grateful for the normalcy. “Then who would they use in every single recruiting post?”
“Exactly,” he said with mock-seriousness. “You’d be letting down the entire future of hockey.”
She rolled her eyes, but her throat felt tight.
Because he was still here. Still looking at her like she mattered.
And she still didn’t know why.
————
It happened again the next week.
They were sitting in the back corner of Bert’s Cafe, rainy afternoon light bleeding through the windows, and Luke was chewing on the sleeve of his hoodie while she tried to explain electric fields for the third time.
“Okay,” she said, tapping the diagram on his tablet. “Think of it like gravity. But instead of mass, it’s charge. Opposites attract, remember?”
“So like… if I’m positive, and you’re negative—”
She gave him a look. “You calling me negative?”
He grinned. “You said it, not me.”
She shook her head, biting back a smile—and that’s when he said it.
“You’re cute when you’re frustrated.”
The words landed with a thud in her chest. She went still.
“What?”
Luke blinked. “What?”
“You said—” Her voice caught. “Never mind.”
But he was watching her now, head tilted, brow creased. “Did that make you uncomfortable?”
“No,” she said too quickly. Then again, softer, “No. It’s fine.”
He looked like he wanted to say something else. But the moment passed. And she was already pulling the conversation back toward electric fields and potential difference and the safety of things that didn’t make her want to cry.
———
Later that night, alone in her room, she stood in front of the mirror and tried to understand what he saw.
She wasn’t soft in the way magazines liked. She wasn’t curvy in the way Instagram liked. She had thick arms, a round belly, wide hips that pulled at the seams of her jeans. Her thighs rubbed holes in leggings by week two. She knew what people like her were called. Knew the names muttered under breath in middle school, the backhanded compliments, the jokes.
And Luke—he was tall and golden and seen. He existed in a world she’d only ever watched from the outside.
So why would he look at her like that?
She squeezed her eyes shut. Swallowed down the guilt of even asking the question.
It didn’t matter. He didn’t mean it. It was just a throwaway comment. A stupid flirt without weight. A joke.
It had to be.
Because the alternative—that he saw her, wanted her—was something she didn’t know how to live with.
———
The physics midterm came and went, and Luke passed—with a B+, no less.
He texted her the second he got the grade.
Luke: ur a genius. my saviour. my queen. how do i repay u
Phoebe: one coffee and maybe a sticker that says “I’m smarter than a hockey player”
Ten minutes later, he showed up at her dorm with two lattes and a pack of glitter star stickers.
“Put one on your forehead,” he said, grinning. “It’s only fair.”
She did. She didn’t even hesitate.
———
After that, the tutoring faded into something else.
They still studied. But now he invited her to late-night diner runs. Walks after class. Study breaks where he begged her to explain memes he didn’t get or tried to teach her how to flick a mini hockey puck across a table using only a spoon.
It wasn’t tutoring anymore.
But it also wasn’t anything else.
Sometimes, she caught him looking at her when he didn’t think she’d notice. And it wasn’t like the way people looked when they were comparing sizes or judging or assessing.
It was soft. Focused.
And God, did that mess her up.
Because she wanted to believe it meant something. Wanted to let herself fall the rest of the way. But the voice in her head always pulled her back.
Don’t be stupid. Don’t embarrass yourself.
She couldn’t afford to lose him. And wanting more? Wanting him?
That was a risk she didn’t think she could take.
———
One night, late April, they found themselves sitting on the grass outside his apartment building after a study session. The air was warm and smelled like budding leaves and cheap beer from a nearby frat house. Luke had his hoodie pulled halfway over his head, eyes squinting up at the sky.
“You ever think about how dumb stars are?” he said suddenly.
She laughed. “What?”
“They’re just… balls of gas. But people write poetry about them and make wishes and shit.”
“That’s not dumb,” she said, pulling her knees to her chest. “It’s kind of beautiful. That people want to believe in something that far away.”
He turned to look at her. “You believe in stuff like that?”
She hesitated. “I want to.”
Luke was quiet for a second. “I think I do. Believe in that stuff.”
She looked over, and he was still watching her. Really watching her. Like he could see right past all the things she tried to hide behind sarcasm and notes and perfectly rehearsed explanations of Coulomb’s Law.
“Do you ever wish for anything?” she asked before she could stop herself.
His eyes dropped to her mouth, just for a second.
“Yeah,” he said softly. “I do.”
The silence stretched. The air went still. She could feel the pull between them like gravity—heavy, inescapable, terrifying.
She turned away before he could see the hope in her eyes.
———
After that night, everything felt different. Closer. Louder.
He texted more. Sat closer. Let his leg press against hers and didn’t move away. He played with her pen during study sessions, let his fingers brush hers when he handed her his notebook. All little things. All nothing, probably. But to her, they felt like cracks in the dam.
And still—she didn’t say anything.
Because what if she was wrong?
What if this was just how Luke Hughes was with everyone? Warm. Open. Easy to fall for. And what if she confessed and ruined it? Lost him entirely?
She would rather take the ache than the silence of a goodbye.
———
The day it nearly all came crashing down, it was raining.
Not just drizzling—pouring. She’d left class without an umbrella, already soaked by the time she made it to the library steps.
Luke was there.
Waiting.
He was holding an extra hoodie and a coffee, like he’d known exactly how her day would go.
“Jesus,” she said, breathless. “Are you psychic now?”
He grinned. “I knew you’d forget your jacket.”
He draped the hoodie over her shoulders like it was the most natural thing in the world. It was warm and smelled like him—mint and soap and something woodsy she couldn’t name.
She stared at him. Something in her chest cracked.
“Why are you so nice to me?” she asked quietly, almost too quiet to hear over the rain.
He blinked. “What do you mean?”
“I mean… you don’t have to do this. Bring me coffee. Wait in the rain. Let me steal your hoodie. Why do you—” She broke off. Her throat was thick with it. “Why do you treat me like I’m—special?”
Luke was quiet for a long time.
And then, softly, he said, “Because you are.”
It felt like the world stopped spinning. Just for a second.
She stepped back. Shook her head.
“No,” she said, too fast. “Don’t—don’t say that. You don’t have to lie.”
“I’m not lying.” His brows knit, confused. “Why would I—?”
“Because I know how this works,” she snapped, voice sharp with hurt. “I’ve seen the girls you hang out with, Luke. I know what people expect you to want.”
“What are you talking about?”
“I’m talking about me!” she said, voice breaking. “Look at me. I’m not—God, I’m not the girl guys like you fall for.”
Silence.
Luke looked at her like she’d said something impossible. Like she’d just told him gravity wasn’t real.
“That’s bullshit,” he said, voice low.
Her breath caught.
“You think I don’t see you?” he continued. “You think I don’t notice the way you light up when you explain something? Or how you make everything easier just by being around?”
She shook her head. “Don’t—”
“I’m not playing with you,” he said. “I don’t do that. Not with you.”
She stared at him, rain clinging to her lashes, hoodie soaked through. Her heart beat so loud she thought it might split her ribs.
“I don’t get it,” she whispered. “Why me?”
His voice cracked, just a little.
“Because you make me feel like I’m more than some dumb hockey player. Because I like you. I’ve liked you.”
The words were soft. Real. Terrifying.
She didn’t say anything.
Couldn’t.
Because if she opened her mouth, she might say I like you too—and she wasn’t ready for what came next.
So she turned.
And she ran.
———
She didn’t sleep that night.
Every time she closed her eyes, she saw Luke’s face—wet hair stuck to his forehead, eyes wide and confused and hurt. Heard his voice: Because I like you. I’ve liked you.
She pressed her palms over her ears like it would make it all go away.
It didn’t.
————
The next morning, Emily was already in their room, curled up with a blanket and laptop, when she stumbled in.
“You look like you fought God,” Emily said around a spoonful of yogurt.
She dropped onto the bed. “I ran away from Luke.”
Emily blinked. “What?”
“I mean literally ran.” She stared at the ceiling, voice hollow. “He told me he liked me. And I panicked and left him standing in the rain like a goddamn rom-com cliché.”
Emily’s spoon hovered in midair. “Wait—he said he likes you? Like, actually said it?”
She nodded.
“And you ran.”
Another nod.
“Okay. First of all, what the fuck, and second of all—WHAT THE FUCK.”
She groaned, pulling a pillow over her face.
Emily yanked it off. “Phoebe. I love you, but what the hell were you thinking?”
“I wasn’t!” she snapped, sitting up. “I was—scared. I am scared.”
Emily’s face softened. “Hey. I get that. But you’ve been pining over him for months. And now he says he likes you back and you think what—he’s lying?”
“Not lying,” she mumbled. “Just… confused.”
Emily narrowed her eyes. “You really think someone like Luke Hughes confuses liking someone with what? Friendship? Pity?”
She didn’t answer. Because that was exactly what she’d thought.
Emily sighed. “You know, just because you’ve been told you’re not the kind of girl someone could want doesn’t mean it’s true.”
She didn’t respond.
Because some truths lived too deep to root out in one morning.
———
She didn’t hear from Luke the rest of that day. Or the next.
He didn’t show up to their usual study spot. Didn’t text. Didn’t like her dumb meme about Schrödinger’s cat. His silence hurt more than anything else he could’ve said.
But she didn’t blame him.
Because she knew what it was like to reach out and get burned.
She’d just never imagined she’d be the one holding the match.
———
By Thursday, the guilt was eating her alive. So she did what she always did when she needed to think: she went to the library.
Their table was empty.
Her heart sank.
She sat down anyway, pulled out her notes, and tried to pretend she wasn’t scanning the door every five minutes.
And then—like her thoughts had summoned him—Luke walked in.
He looked tired. Not angry. Not even sad. Just… guarded.
She stood the second she saw him.
“Hey.”
He hesitated, then gave a small nod. “Hey.”
They stood there, books and silence between them, until she couldn’t take it anymore.
“I’m sorry,” she said, voice shaking. “I shouldn’t have—I didn’t mean to run like that.”
Luke didn’t say anything.
She tried again.
“I panicked. It’s not because I don’t—” She swallowed. “It’s not because I didn’t want to hear what you said.”
He looked at her then. “Then why?”
God, she didn’t want to say it. Didn’t want to lay herself bare like this. But he deserved the truth. Even if it came out ugly.
“Because I don’t understand why you’d like me,” she said, voice cracking. “I don’t look like the girls you’re supposed to want. I’m not skinny or pretty or—whatever.”
He stared at her like she’d slapped him.
“That’s what you think this is about?” he asked, low.
She blinked.
“Jesus, Phoebe.” He ran a hand through his hair. “You think I care what other people expect me to want?”
“You’re you,” she whispered. “And I’m just—me.”
He stepped closer. Not touching. Just enough to make her feel it.
“You’re not ‘just’ anything.”
She looked away. “You don’t get it.”
“No,” he said. “But I want to.”
A pause. He softened.
“Let me get it.”
She blinked fast. “I don’t want to be someone you regret.”
Luke’s jaw clenched. “I could never regret you.”
The words sat heavy between them.
He looked at her for a long moment, then said quietly, “I’m not going to push you. But I meant what I said. I like you. And not in some passing ‘oh she’s cute’ way. I like the way your brain works. The way you ramble when you’re trying not to smile. The way you take care of people even when you’re breaking.”
She pressed a hand to her mouth, tears stinging behind her eyes.
“I don’t want this if it’s going to hurt you,” he added. “But if it’s just fear holding you back—please don’t let it win.”
Her heart cracked open.
“Luke…”
“I’ll wait,” he said gently. “Just tell me there’s a chance.”
She looked up at him. Really looked. Saw the honesty, the warmth, the hope he hadn’t let go of—even when she’d tried to push him away.
And for the first time, she let herself believe it.
“Okay,” she whispered. “There’s a chance.”
Luke’s shoulders dropped, like he’d been holding his breath this whole time.
“Okay,” he echoed, soft and sure.
————
They didn’t kiss that day.
He didn’t pull her into his arms or say anything grand or cinematic.
But he did sit beside her, closer than usual, and opened his notebook.
And when their hands brushed, neither of them pulled away.
—————
They didn’t define it right away.
There was no official we’re dating talk, no grand proclamations. But after that afternoon in the library, everything shifted.
Luke texted her good morning now.
He walked her to class, even when it was out of his way.
When they studied, he let his thigh press against hers like it belonged there. Sometimes he brought snacks. Sometimes she brought extra pens because he always lost his. He started saying things like missed you today or this song reminded me of you or you looked really pretty earlier, just so you know, and he said it so easily—so genuinely—that eventually, she stopped flinching when he did.
Eventually, she started believing him.
The voice in her head—the one that told her she wasn’t enough—still lingered. Some days it shouted. But when Luke looked at her like she hung constellations, it was easier to quiet it. Easier to say, Maybe he sees something I don’t. Maybe that’s okay.
————
One night in early May, he texted her.
Luke: come outside
She blinked at the message.
Phoebe: ??? it’s almost midnight
Luke: and? bring a hoodie. trust me.
She found him standing outside her dorm, hair tousled, smile soft, hoodie sleeves pushed halfway up his arms. He had a blanket tucked under one arm and two milkshakes in hand.
“You kidnapping me?” she teased.
“Nah,” he said. “Just stealing you for a bit.”
He took her to a hill just outside campus—secluded, grassy, high enough to see the city lights blur in the distance. It was quiet. Private.
He spread out the blanket. Handed her the chocolate shake. Sat so close their shoulders touched.
“Remember that dumb thing I said about stars?” he asked after a while.
She smiled. “That they’re just gas but people still write poetry about them?”
“Yeah.” He looked up. “I get it now.”
She tilted her head. “Yeah?”
Luke turned to her, and his expression made her heart stop. So open. So gentle. Like she was the only thing he saw.
“Some things are beautiful because of what they make you feel,” he said quietly. “Even if they don’t make sense. Even if they’re far away or hard to reach.”
She swallowed. “Are we still talking about stars?”
“No,” he said, soft. “We’re not.”
Silence fell again—but this time, it wasn’t heavy. It was full. Buzzing. A calm before something that felt like lightning.
Luke leaned in, slow and careful.
She didn’t flinch. Didn’t look away.
When he kissed her, it was gentle. No fireworks or fanfare. Just warm, steady lips and the feeling of finally, finally, landing somewhere safe.
Her fingers curled into the sleeve of his hoodie. His hand cupped her cheek, thumb brushing just beneath her eye. He pulled back just enough to look at her.
“You okay?” he whispered.
She nodded, heart pounding.
“Yeah,” she said. “More than okay.”
He smiled. Pressed another kiss to her temple like he’d been waiting forever to do it.
————
After that, there were words.
He started calling her his girl.
Introduced her to his teammates—who, shockingly, didn’t bat an eye. If anything, they seemed happy to see Luke looking so settled. (One of them winked at her and said, “Thank God. He’s been unbearable. You’re doing God’s work.”)
Luke held her hand in public. Let her wear his hoodie even when he pretended to pout about it. Texted her things like thinking about you during team meetings and wanna come over and watch dumb sci-fi movies so I can pretend to understand physics.
He never made her feel small.
Never made her feel like he was hiding her, or settling, or choosing her in spite of something.
He just chose her. Over and over again.
And that did something to her.
Something healing.
————
Finals came and went in a blur of caffeine and highlighters and three a.m. breakdowns. She helped him study. He brought her snacks.
On the last day of the semester, after they submitted their final lab report, he took her hand and said, “I think this is the first time I’ve ever liked physics.”
She raised an eyebrow. “Even after all the crying over projectile motion?”
He grinned. “Especially after that. You looked cute when you yelled at me about parabolas.”
She shoved him lightly, but she was smiling.
————
The night before she left for home, he showed up at her door with takeout and a bouquet of wildflowers.
She blinked at them.
“You know this is such a rom-com move , right?” she said.
Luke just shrugged. “You deserve rom-com shit.”
He kissed her like he meant it. Like they had all the time in the world. And when he whispered, “I’m gonna miss you like hell,” against her collarbone, she knew this wasn’t a temporary thing.
They’d figure out the summer.
Figure out everything else, too.
————
A week later, she got a text.
Luke: my mom wants to meet you. she already stalked your Instagram. she thinks you’re cute.
She laughed so hard she nearly dropped her phone.
And for the first time, that voice in her head—the one that told her she’d never be enough—didn’t say a thing.
Because maybe she was.
Maybe she always had been.

So, you want to make a TTRPG…
Tumblr media
Image from Pexels.
I made a post a long while back about what advice you would give to new designers. My opinions have changed somewhat on what I think beginners should start with (I originally talked about probability) but I thought it might be useful to provide some resources for designers, new and established, that I've come across or been told about. Any additions to these in reblogs are much appreciated!
This is going to be a long post, so I'll continue beneath the cut.
SRDs
So, you have an idea for a type of game you want to play, and you've decided you want to make it yourself. Fantastic! The problem is, you're not sure where to start. That's where System Reference Documents (SRDs) can come in handy. There are a lot of games out there, and a lot of mechanical systems designed for those games. Using one of these as a basis can massively accelerate and smooth the process of designing your game. I came across a database of a bunch of SRDs (including the licenses you should adhere to when using them) a while back, I think from someone mentioning it on Tumblr or Discord.
SRDs Database
Probability
So, you have a basic system but want to tweak it to work better with the vision you have for the game. If you're using dice, this is where you might want to consider probability. Not every game needs this step, but it's worth checking that the numbers tell the story you're trying to tell with your game. For this, I'll link the site I did in that first post, AnyDice. It allows you to do a lot of mathematical calculations using dice, and see the probability distribution that results for each. There's documentation that explains how to use it, though it does take practice.
AnyDice
Playtesting
So you've written the rules of your game and want to playtest it but can't convince any of your friends to give it a try. Enter Quest Check. Quest Check is a website created by Trekiros for connecting potential playtesters to designers. I can't speak to how effective it is (I've yet to use it myself) but it's great that a resource like it exists. There's a video he made about the site, and the site can be found here:
Quest Check
Graphic Design and Art
Game is written and tested? You can publish it as-is, or you can make it look cool with graphics and design. This is by no means an essential step, but is useful if you want to get eyes on it. I've got a few links for this. First off, design principles:
Design Cheatsheet
Secondly, art. I would encourage budding designers to avoid AI imagery. You'll be surprised how good you can make your game look with only shapes and lines, even if you aren't confident in your own artistic ability. As another option, public domain art is plentiful, and is fairly easy to find! I've compiled a few links to compilations of public domain art sources here (be sure to check the filters to ensure it's public domain):
Public Domain Sources 1
Public Domain Sources 2
You can also make use of free stock image sites like Pexels or Pixabay (Pixabay can filter by vector graphics, but has recently become much more clogged with AI imagery, though you can filter out most of it, providing it's tagged correctly).
Pexels
Pixabay
Fonts
Turns out I've collected a lot of resources. When publishing, it's important to bear in mind what you use has to be licensed for commercial use if you plan to sell your game. One place this can slip through is fonts. Enter, my saviour (and eternal time sink), Google Fonts. The Open Font License (OFL) has minimal restrictions for what you can do with it, and most fonts here are available under it:
Google Fonts
Publishing
So, game is designed, written, and formatted. Publishing time! There are two places that I go to to publish my work: itch.io and DriveThruRPG. For beginners I would recommend itch - there's less hoops to jump through and you take a much better cut of what you sell your games for, but DriveThruRPG has its own merits (@theresattrpgforthat made great posts here and here for discovering games on each). Itch in particular has regular game jams to take part in to inspire new games. I'll link both sites:
itch.io
DriveThruRPG
Finally, a bunch of other links I wasn't sure where to put, along with a very brief summary of what they are.
Affinity Suite, the programs I use for all my layout and designing. Has an up-front cost to buy but no subscriptions, and has a month-long free trial for each.
Affinity Suite
A database of designers to be inspired by or work with. Bear in mind that people should be paid for their work and their time should be respected.
Designer Directory
An absolute behemoth list of resources for TTRPG creators:
Massive Resources List
A site to make mockups of products, should you decide to go that route:
Mockup Selection
A guide to making published documents accessible to those with visual impairments:
Visual Impairment Guidelines
A post from @theresattrpgforthat about newsletters:
Newsletter Post
Rascal News, a great place to hear about what's going on in the wider TTRPG world:
Rascal News
Lastly, two UK-specific links for those based here, like me:
A list of conventions in the UK & Ireland:
Convention List
A link to the UK Tabletop Industry Network (@uktabletopindustrynetwork) Discord where you can chat with fellow UK-based designers:
TIN Discord
That's all I've got! Feel free to reblog if you have more stuff people might find useful (I almost certainly will be)!

TS3 World Adventures - Mooncakes & Mooncake Machine Maker Remastered: Mooncake Mesh & Texture with Enhanced Graphics & Enabled to Buy Mode & Renamed Mod (All Languages) & Icons Replacement Mod
D E F A U L T   R E P L A C E M E N T
New custom Mooncake mesh & texture, to replace EA's "Fortune Cookies" machine maker and edible cake taken from machine maker with working Geostates & animation
Tumblr media Tumblr media
EA's graphics from 512x512 with noise was enhanced to 1024x1024 with less noise and adding Simlish Hanzi to replace EA's "bad handwriting" texture on the machine maker. Click this picture below to enlarge.
Tumblr media
Enabled to Buy Mode (Appliances > Miscellaneous Appliances), for easy access no need to type cheat "Buydebug" mode ever again.
Tumblr media
STBL Renamed mod, from "Fortune Cookies" to "Mooncakes" translated to all languages.
月餅 (Yuèbǐng)= Moon Cake
ⓘ For language translations except Chinese, I use online translator to change word "Fortune Cookies" ---> "Mooncakes" & "Mooncake" depending on singular and plural context. Feel free to correct in comment section if you feel the translation and the grammar is wrong or I accidentally deleted other word.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Icons changed from EA's Fortune Cookies to Mooncake
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Reason why I made the change:
Because Shang Simla is taking place in China, not American Chinatown, thus the portrayal of the cookies should be authentic of actual China in real life, not American cookies that are foreign to actual Chinese people. Fortune Cookies are U.S.A.- made cookies: American invention originating in California. History of Fortune Cookies (source: fancyfortunecookies.com) Mooncakes are cakes originated from China, dates back over 3,000 years to ancient China. Mooncakes are a traditional treat during the Mid-Autumn Festival, which is celebrated on the 15th day of the eighth month of the lunar calendar.
Mooncakes are the must-eat Mid-Autumn food in China. They are a traditional Chinese pastry. Their round shape and sweet flavor symbolize completeness and sweetness. At the Mid-Autumn Festival, people eat mooncakes together with family, or present mooncakes to relatives or friends, to express their love and best wishes. Mooncakes are usually eaten after dinner while admiring the moon. History of Mooncakes in China... (source: chinahighlights.com) Fortune Cookies are made in USA and only exist in USA, but mistaken by USA people themselves as "Chinese" cookies just because the cookies are sold in American Chinese restaurant in USA. We actual Chinese live on our country have never seen Fortune Cookies, as we only know the presence of those cookies in Hollywood (U.S.A.) movies. Not just culture inaccuracy, I enabled this machine maker in Buy Mode section for easy access because this item must have been forgotten in the corner and only been played once when the player visit Shang Simla.
Colour & Presets: Same as original EA's: 3 Presets & original EA's Fortune Cookies Machine Maker colour channels.
How to Change Default EA's Fortune Cookies to Mooncake in Shang Simla world.
Fortune Cookies maker in Shang Simla doesn't automatically change to Mooncake due to different coding in-game.
❗You must buy Mooncake Machine Maker from Buy Mode (Appliances > Miscellaneous Appliances) to load the texture first, then travel to Shang Simla world, do "Reset Textures" using Nraas' Debug Enabler.
You need to install Nraas' Debug Enabler (Core mod by Twallan) in order to work correctly ❗
Follow these steps to reset textures:
Click on the Fortune Cookies Maker > Nraas > Debug Enabler > Options: Lucky Factory Mooncake Maker > Object… > Reset Textures > (Choose one) All Sims3.Gameplay.Objects.Appliances.FortuneCookieMaker or This Object

Living Harmony AU relevant character sheets/info: Harmony aka the "Tree of Harmony" Stygian Somnambula Starswirl the Bearded Shadow Lock is actually an official canon character from the IDW comics No. 51-53 and I really enjoyed his mini arc introduction enough to include him as a more significant part of my "Living Harmony" MLP AU animation project. When I found out he's a direct descendant of Stygian, one of the Pillars of Equestria, I had to find a way to work him in and give him a bit of an updated design to fit more into my story setting I have planned. My good friend Ori helped vector my finalized concept redesign in the very top image. Listed below is some character and story context for these sketches provided by my myself and Ori who's been a huge help in fleshing out the world building with this cast of characters I'm using in this AU so far. Shadow Lock's main abilities and canon backstory are expanded upon and/or flavored a bit differently here as well.
Stygian’s distant descendant, the last living branch in his family tree
Lives alone in his family’s castle after they retired to the town of Somnambula
Temporary antagonist to the mane 6 that stems from a fear of the Pony of Shadows returning to plague Equestria
Believed he was descended from a monster and desperately tried to erase any mention of the Pony of Shadows from written history
Was talked down from his history erasing spree by Twilight and ends up traveling around Equestria to find more info on the Pony of Shadows, without trying to erase the knowledge this time, and prevent it from returning
The symbol on the front of Shadow Lock’s cloak is his family crest that dates back to Stygian's time period.
There’s a glamor woven into Shadow Lock’s cloak that enshrouds its wearer’s face.
Shadow Lock’s special talent is the concealment and binding of dark magic. He can effectively bind malevolent “spirits” into vessels where they’re unable to cause harm. This can also be reversed as an unbinding spell. ("spirits" in this context are more like a culmination of lingering, concentrated dark magic that takes on a will of its own)
His family castle used to be quite “haunted”. It’s quieter nowadays, but he does have a large collection of miscellaneous items that most ponies would consider “cursed…”
Always carries a healthy stack of books on his person to read and use as a weapon. His spells can pull fictional characters and monsters from stories to fight for him
Created a spell that can trap a creature into experiencing a historical event on loop by using a small amount of written text. The spell can be broken by doing something significant enough that did not occur during the looped event in history.
Shadow Lock and Stygian are extremely hesitant to meet each other at first in present time. The mane 6 and Harmony step in as mediator eventually to help them work out their issues so they can reconnect as family
Much later in the story, Shadow Lock invites Stygian to live in his castle once their family relationship is repaired, the two becoming inseparable
His original design from the comics:

Kinktober 31/10/2024 The Grid - Halloween Party
Plot: Halloween Party Couple Costumes
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
MAX VERSTAPPEN:
You both went to the party as the characters from Kill Bill, it was one of Max's favorite films and you were excited to dress up as the Bride. Originally you were going to go for the full latex outfit but because Max had a few parties in the same night you'd both be travelling between you had to do a bit of makeshift work.
"You look hot" he says looking over you as you unzip the bright yellow top you had on, just to show off a little more cleavage for him.
"Yeah?" you ask pulling the katana up and holding it in positions being goofy as he took some pictures of you.
"And i think dying your hair blonde ... good shout" he grins running his hands through your freshly dyed blonde locks just so you could pull of this Halloween costume without a wig.
Tumblr media
LANDO NORRIS:
You wanted to be funny and go as Gru and Vector ... but no McLaren thought it was too 'silly' and wasn't a 'good image' for Lando as a now championship contender.
So you guys decided as you were only going to a small Quadrant Haloween party that you guys would go lowkey and just try and use as much stuff as you could from home.
Naturally you were both at home when he had the idea of both going as the game characters from Subway Surfers, out of all the games both you and Lando played you didn't expect to go as mobile game characters, something from Valorant or even Tarkov but no here you were with a red beanie, hitched up red underwear under low rise jeans and an empty aerosol can.
"Cant believe you convinced me into this" you shake your head, knowing all the girls there would be going as either really hot people or would be very funny like you'd intended ... but at least you were with Lando and you guys both couldn't escape the costume police you knew would be at the party.
"You love me babe now come on lets go jump some trains"
Tumblr media
OSCAR PIASTRI:
When Oscar had met you when he first came to England you made of point of forcing him to binge your comfort show, Peaky Blinders with you which led to this years Halloween costume for the both of you.
While Oscar was the gentleman and got his outfit as show accurate as possible you took the hot slant on it despite having a shirt, waistcoat and jacket covering up the majority of your upper body leaving your legs to do all the hot girl work.
"We look good" Oscar smiled looking at you guys in the long full length mirror in your apartment as you guys were about to leave.
"You're right we do" you smile reaching up to kiss his cheek forgetting the bright red lipstick that was covering your lips.
"AH AH. Let them dry first" he says putting his finger on one showing the stain.
When you got to Logan's party you were met with such a different vibe. You and Oscar had decided to stay in America for Halloween which was a good choice as they were crazy for any kind of holiday celebration.
"Will anyone here know who we are?" you ask wondering if you're costume was too niche.
"Lets hope they don't, quick and easy conversations so we don't look rude and unimpressed" he kisses the side of you head, knowing how introverted you both are/
Tumblr media
CARLOS SAINZ:
Of course you had to go as young Morticia and Gomez Addams. It was something you knew for a fact Carlos would look incredible in and you had the perfect features to pull of Morticia.
You guys were attending a Halloween Party that actually had a lot of the drivers at, it was in a club that had invited you all as a brand deal with F1 and you guys all didn't really have an excuse not to go.
You guys got an uber, which is a strange experience when you have a boyfriend who drives for a living.
So many of the other wags were there and a costume competition had been held which you and Carlos had ended up winning, you think Lando most defiantly forged the votes but you couldn't deny that you and Carlos looked like you both put the most amount off effort in.
Tumblr media
CHARLES LECLERC:
Charles didn't ever really understand the hype for spooky season, enjoying other more family oriented holidays more such as Christmas or even birthdays.
But when you said that your sister was hosting a small party (that of course ended up being not so small at all) that she was dying for you to make an appearance at you had to go despite the late notice.
So there you guys were two days before ironing patches to blue and red tops you'd brought from the most accessible shops in Monaco and because you were bringing Charles and you wanted to match but with the lack of time options were thin.
So of course doing a really bad attempt at Sally and Lightening McQueen was the option Charles decided on and everyone at the party found you guys so funny especially once they realised who Charles was as a famous racing driver.
To say despite the 5 minute crafts outfit you guys put together you were everyone's choice of conversation both at the party and after.
Tumblr media
YUKI TSUNODA:
Chef Linguine, absolutely not Chef Tsunoda and you as his Remi. It meant you got to dress up as a sexy mouse while Yuki could live his dreams of being a chef, dressing up in the whole outfit that you were surprised to see he just had in his closest already.
"You look like a cute mouse" he smiles looking over the white corset and sort grey skirt you'd opted for.
"Do i make a good Remi?" you ask sweetly and he nods.
"I still don't get why you didn't go as Collette" he sighs, thinking it would be odd for him to kiss you tonight when this was your outfit.
"Because canonically Collette is a better chef than Linguine because actually Linguine cannot cook without the rats help ... so I'm still not sure why i went as the rat. Maybe i should have gone as Chef Skinner" you groan now overthinking the whole costume.
Tumblr media
FRANCO COLAPINTO:
Franco's nickname for you was 'princesa' so of course you going as one of the Disney Princesses made sense however when he said you guys should do Flynn Ryder and Rapunzel you almost lost your shit.
You were going to suggest the little mermaid as you'd love to see him in Prince Eric's soft pirate outfit but the Flynn outfit was just as exciting and you of course looked great in purple and could use your naturally blonde hair.
"Are you ready my Princesa?" he asks from the bottom of the stairs. You were expecting to turn round the corner with a soft graceful smile to see HIM awestruck at your costume.
Unfortunately god had other plans and it was you who was gobsmacked at your incredibly sexy boyfriend.
"Fuckkkkk Francoooo. Lets skip the party" you say running down the stairs to grip onto his arm.
Tumblr media
FERNANDO ALONSO:
As an older couple on the grid who still loved a party and having fun you and Fernando decided old school was the best way forward. And for Fernando seeing you in sexy leather pants and a tight black top he was all but happy to keep pulling you away for sneaky kisses once you'd got to the club.
Nando was normally very ... sexually driven but this outfit of yours had turned him into some kind of beast and you were not complaining.
Especially when you guys got home that night.
Tumblr media
ESTEBAN OCON:
Being the Marvel nerd that he was he'd asked if he could do Deadpool and you do Wolverine, which you did want to at first but when you couldn't find the right hairstyle and decided the outfit just didn't look good this year it fell through to be picked up another year.
Which is where his next idea came in, you'd both decided to go as Spiderman's he'd worn some grey joggers with him as the suit was pretty tight on him and he didn't want anything to come out in the media however you took the Spiderman look the whole way and for the whole night Estaban had to stay close to you warding off all the other guys who were watching you with what he explained to you as 'fuck me' eyes.

"We are all works-in-progress.
You deserve much patience and time."
Edit: I have lost the file I edited in both the Wing strap and spelling. I will most likely just uploaded another after I sorted it out.
For this year's Valentine's Day, I gave you Always & Forever that I have been working on since 2nd Feb.
I decided to work with fabric craft idea, and turn her rose tiara into a clothe flower crown.

Our Objective Remains Unchanged by @citrusses
"Harry Potter, returning member of the Oxford University Boat Club, has two goals for the spring of 2005: beat Cambridge, and beat Draco Malfoy. Perhaps not in that order."
This has to be one of the most creative and meticulously researched fics I have ever had the pleasure of reading. If you haven't read it yet, don't walk— run! Citrusses is an absolute genius, and kindly gave me permission to bind her masterpiece.
The cover of this bind is made out four different shades of Allure bookcloth cut by my Cameo 4, and the centerpiece is printed and hand foiled. The banners were machine foiled in gold and black with hand foiled rose gold shading. The endbands were hand sewn with Gutermann silk thread.
You can find more pictures and information about my process under the cut.
The amount of inspiration this fic gave me was overwhelming, and Citrusses' writing fully immersed me in the world of competitive rowing. While designing this bind, I was struck by the sheer wealth of Oxford rowing memorabilia available to me. I settled on this 1929 illustration from an official publication on the Oxford and Cambridge Centenary Boat Race for the cover.
Tumblr media
"How hard could it possibly be?" I thought, foolishly. The answer was HARD, but I'll get into that later.
Due to the wealth of design options, I believe that this may be the best typeset I have created to date. Thanks to the help of my friend @tsurashi-bindery, I was able to learn the basics of InDesign (kicking and screaming all the way). There will be spoilers in the text of these photos, so try not to read them if you haven't finished the fic!

For the title page, I modified To See the Crews in Training by Charles Pears (1930). I believe that this was part of a series of advertisements for the race in the London Underground.

For the chapter headers, I redrew the crest from an Oxford Oars, Flags, and Arms postcard, presumably pre 1914. I also had some fun creating a mock email using La_Temperanza's How to Mimic Email Windows on Ao3. Cormac's email makes me laugh every time I read it, and Citrusses provided an appropriately pompous subject.
Tumblr media
I also had lots of fun editing the oars from the official OUBC logo to serve as dividers and decorations for the page numbers.
Tumblr media
Additionally, I got to edit a full newspaper page for the fic! I was very excited find an opportunity to slip Leyendecker's The Finish (1908) in.
Tumblr media
The fic ended beautifully, so I wanted to include one last element at the end to capture the atmosphere. I settled on L'aviron (1932) by Milivoj Uzelac. It makes me feel as though Harry and Draco will continue rowing together long after I've closed the book.
Tumblr media
I of course had lots of fun sewing the headbands, and got to do it with not one but TWO copies!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Things got tricky when I had to recreate the cover. I had a poor understanding of how vector images worked, and ended up having to redraw it three times. Once I finally cracked and taught myself how to use Illustrator, the program crashed...and I had to redraw it a fourth time!
I set the vector to cut on my Cameo 4, and I assembled the pieces together like a puzzle on my Silhouette mat. I used Allure's indigo, skylight, white, and black bookcloth in the process. I will be making a tutorial video on this method, so I will keep it brief here.

I also cut a piece of bookcloth to 8.5"x 11" and fed it through my inktank printer to print the center design. I then cut it out using the print and cut feature on my Cameo 4. Both of these methods were a first for me, and they were very scary!!

To be perfectly frank, the foiling was a nightmare and I don't want to get into it. I machine foiled the gold, and then foiled black lettering on top of it. I foiled the rose gold shading by hand, and then foiled a thin black outline along the edge of the banners to make them stand out more.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I hand foiled the spines (because I'm scared of measuring), painted the exposed board (to hide any gaps in the inlays), and used transfer tape to lift my design from the Silhouette mat and onto the cover.

One more fun detail— my copy and the author's copy are sisters! The dark blue and the light blue are inverted on the author's copy, making it distinguishable from mine. This is the first time I have made an author's copy for a fic, and I was admittedly incredibly nervous. I always worry about what authors will think of my work, but Citrusses gave me an incredible amount of encouragement and support throughout the process! Thank you for trusting me with your precious fic!
This story is a work of fanfiction and can be read on Ao3 for free. My bind and typeset are for personal use only and not for sale or profit. Keep fandom free!

hii! i absolutely love your work. i've been getting into trying to make borders myself, and i was wondering if you had any tips on where to find good pngs or do you create everything yourself? i feel like my luck so far hasn't been great but maybe i just don't know how to search for it correctly!
Hello, nonnie! I'm so glad you enjoy my work; thank you for your kind words. ( ˶ˆᗜˆ˵ ) And oh my gosh, it's so nice to see a new GFX creator in the making! One of us, one of us, one us. ~ Welcome to the wonderful world of editing, hehe!
I've compiled a list of websites that I use for my graphics, but please do let me know if you need anything else and I'll be happy to assist!
For general assets, as well as inspiration, I generally use these websites: behance (which is pretty much the industry standard when it comes to graphic design in general, they have cool studios or experienced designers that post their works and/or assets), booth (an independent japanese resources hub with many free and paid assets), huanban (an independent chinese resources hub, same proposal as booth), abdz (mostly focused on typography and branding), dribble (more focused on web applications and design) and envato (templates).
Since I'm colourblind, I'm not always confident about how to compose colours together. So whenever I'm in doubt, I use coolors (to get palettes from images and browse through palette ideas) and colorhunt (which gives ideas for palette themes and motifs).
I love typography a whole bunch, but sometimes it's hard to find that one right font for your project. Whenever I need to look for something else, I always run to these websites: google fonts (when I'm on a budget and want to use 100% free fonts, including for commercial use), 1001fonts (to quickly find fonts based on themes, it has a great tag system), dafont (a big classic huge dabatase of custom fonts), befonts (for more industry standard-leaning fonts) and kerismaker (for those magazine looks). When I want to identify a font used on an image and where I can download/purchase it, I use myfonts and font squirrel. They even give you similar options for free, too!
Suppose I'm specifically searching for illustrations/PNGs I can use on my upcoming project. In that case, I'll either go to flat icons (for websites, applications or presentations), vertex (for 3d icons and/or general vectors), graphic burger (for logo making), cleanpng (for I want a tree PNG and do not want to clean it myself, for example), pngtree (same idea as the previous one, you just search for a word and will see all PNGs related to it) and pngall (self explanatory).
Regarding backgrounds, textures, and photography in general, I rely on websites like pixabay, vecteezy, 3d ocean, morguefile, freepik and isorepublic. They have high-quality photos and videos that you can use on your projects. However, if I specifically need mockups or patterns, I turn to unblast, pacage and ava.
Besides those, you can always search for things on Deviantart and Twitter! Though I do not use those much, I think Instagram and Threads also have pages dedicated to sharing resources. Discord can be a nice place to search for graphic design servers, too.
However, if I cannot find specific resources for a commission/project for whatever reason, then I will make them myself. Be it through photography, drawing or anything else I can get my little hands on.
For the more technical/applications side, the programs I use for my graphics and edits are Adobe PhotoShop 2020, Adobe After Effects 2020, Adobe Illustrator 2020, Clip Studio Paint (for when I need to draw or polish something for specific projects/commissions), and HandBrake (for when I need to make screencaps). My drawing tablet is an oldie, Wacom One.
Hopefully, this can be a nice starting point for you! Please feel free to reblog and/or like this post if you'd like to save it for whatever purpose. ~ I hope you enjoy this journey ahead, and if you need anything else, let me know! You got this! ദ്ദി ˉ͈̀꒳ˉ͈́ )✧
